What affects the price?
Grade & Screen Size
Screen 18 Robusta commands a premium over Screen 12. Bugisu AA (screen 17+) is worth more than Bugisu B. Every millimetre of bean size and every percentage point of defect tolerance moves the price.
Global Futures
ICE Arabica (New York) and LIFFE Robusta (London) set the baseline. Uganda's physical prices trade at a differential to these futures -- currently Arabica futures at ~US$2.59/lb, Robusta at ~US$3,427/ton.
Processing Method
Washed coffee costs more to produce than natural. The extra labour, water, and fermentation time add UGX 2,000-4,000/kg at farmgate. But the cup premium at export can be US$0.50-1.50/kg higher.
Certification & Traceability
EUDR-compliant coffee with full chain of custody commands a premium. Organic and Rainforest Alliance certifications add US$0.20-0.50/kg. Direct trade relationships where farmgate prices are published often trade at 15-25% above UCDA minimum.
Season & Supply
Uganda has two harvests: March-June (main) and September-November (fly crop). Prices typically soften during peak harvest and firm between seasons. Global supply shocks -- drought in Brazil, floods in Vietnam -- can swing Uganda's prices within weeks.
Exchange Rate
Coffee is traded in US dollars. When the Uganda Shilling weakens against the dollar, farmers receive more UGX per kilo even if the dollar price stays flat. Current rate: ~3,742 UGX/USD.
